Why Does Image Metadata Matter?

Image metadata describes information stored with a file. Depending on the format and how the image was created, it may include camera settings, capture date, software details, orientation, or GPS coordinates.

Metadata can help photographers organize pictures and check how an image was created. It can also reveal private details, so review your files before sharing them publicly.

Important: Not every image contains EXIF information. Social media apps, editing programs, screenshots, and image converters may remove some metadata. Missing fields do not necessarily indicate an error.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information can image metadata contain?

Depending on the file, it may contain dimensions, timestamps, camera make and model, exposure settings, software details, and GPS data.

Can I view metadata from any image?

You can view basic file information for most browser-readable images. Detailed EXIF data is available only when the image contains supported metadata.

Does this tool remove image metadata?

No. This page only displays metadata. Use an image metadata remover if you want to create a copy without supported metadata.

Does this tool upload my picture?

The image is processed in your browser by this code. The EXIF library is loaded from an external CDN, but the image itself is not sent to that CDN.

Can metadata reveal my location?

Some photos contain GPS coordinates. If those fields are present, this tool may display them. Review location data before sharing a photo.
